Pre Production - Report

Music Video for the Band

For this production I’m going to make a music video for Black Veil Brides in the end song. I will be making this for a client, Taking Calls For Georgia. The have recorded a cover of this song and they have approached me to make the music video for it.

My client is the band Taking Calls For Georgia. This band consists of Callum Hope (Bassist), Nathan Fisher (Rhythm Guitar), Jack Bates (Lead Guitar), Lochlan Hope (Drummer) and Emily Twist (Singer).  This is a band that formed in Landau Forte Sixth Form and they want to have more professional Recordings done for them.

This song is about not being afraid to die. Most people aren't afraid to die because it is going to happen eventually. What people are scared of is what happens to when you do die and what will happen to you and everyone else and who will tell your story. For the video I am going have someone that is on deaths door and they will be scared and asking people to tell their story. I will mix in shots of the person at a younger age and this will be the telling of the story of the person. All of this will be mixed with band footage as well.

For the filming of the music video it will cost £5000. This seems expensive but because I provide all of the equipment and will be able to gain access to all of the locations that will be needed. For the editing it will cost a further £5000 but this is for the whole music video to be edited and effects added to it and for it to be rendered out and promoted.

I provide all of the equipment that will be used. The camera I use is the Nikon D3300 and this can record in 16:9 1920x1080 Full HD video at 60fps meaning I can get slow motion shots if needed. I will also but using a tripod and a camera dolly. This will mean I can get nice smooth tracking shot. I will also be using a camera stabilizer so I can get moving shots that will be smooth and I can get very close to the band scenes. I also have an action camera that mean I can get very close up and tight shots of the band.

For the Post-Production I will need Computer to edit the music video on. The computer will have to edit on will have to be good specifications for the hardware. The software I will need will be Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015 and Adobe After Effect CC 2015. Premiere Pro CC will be where I will do all of the editing and putting the clips I film together. After Effects CC will be where I will be adding the effects onto the video once the main editing has already been done.

I will need some transport for people and equipment. I will need to get the musical equipment to different locations so I can be able to film the band scene shots for the video. I will also need to get the band to there as well. I will need to get my camera equipment to the different locations as well.

For the crew I will be working alone to make the music video and I will be filming and editing the whole thing as well as setting up the filming equipment and the setting for the narrative. The Band might help me here but apart form that there will be no other crew. I will be holding the boom operator if we need to use the boom arm as well.

I will need to hire some facilities to be able to record the music video because I need to set up a band performance in a performance hall that I will need to hire out and I will need a room so I can have the narrative part recorded.  The money that this will cost is included in the cost of the recording.

There might be some copyright on the cover that I am making the music video for. This is something that I will get in touch with the record label and the band to see if I can use this song to record the music video for. If they agree then 50% of the total earnings of this video will have to go to the person that wrote the song to keep in line with the copyright law.

Recording for the Band

As well as the Music Video I will be making a recording for one of the bands other covers and I will also be doing a remix of a different song that will show the band my mixing style. To go along with the recording I will be mixing and mastering the track to make it sound as good as possible.

I will be recording a cover of Green Day’s American idiot and this will also be the track I will be mixing and mastering. I will also be doing a Remix of an existing track that will show my mixing style. This will all be put together with the music video to make a digital package for the band to use for future things or to sell.

For the recording studio it will cost £70 per hour to record the song. But if you block book 12 hours it will only cost you £700. For Mixing and mastering It will cost a further £50 per hour but if it takes me longer that 12 hours you get it half price so for £300 not £600. This will either be funded but the band or the band will get a grant or some funding of their own to be able to pay for this.

For all of this I will need the music equipment so all of the musical instruments that the band will already have. I will provide all of the relevant microphones for all of the instruments I will be recording. I also have the mixing board and the Apple Mac that I use Cubase on to record and mix everything.

I have a recording studio where I will be doing the entire recording and the microphones are already set up and ready to go all the band needs to do is bring their Instruments and this is something I might need transport for because I will need to get the band and the instruments to the recording studio. This is something that will be looked at before we start the recording.

For the crew there will only be me as I can set up all of the microphones around on all of the instruments and I will be able to do the recording on my own and also the mixing and mastering on my own too. The band will set up and tune their instruments so I don’t need any crew to do that for me.

The talent I will be using is the band Taking Calls For Georgia.

I have my own facilities so we wont need to hire one because I have a completely sound proofed recording studio will all of the equipment that I need to do professional recording.

The song that I will be making a cover of is a copyrighted song and this means that I will be asking for permission off Green Day before we record a cover of the song. If they agree to the cover we will be giving them the legal 50% of the total earnings will go to Green Day.

Pre Porduction - Role Allocation

Cast

For the cast we will be having the band and they will be doing the band scenes and the narrative parts. The Band will also be setting up all of the music equipment for the video as well.

Callum Hope - Bass Guitar
Lochlan Hope - Drums
Jack Bates - Lead Guitar
Nathan Fisher - Rhythm Guitar
Emily Twist - Vocals

Crew

For the crew there will just be me and i will be doing the camera and if needed the boom operator. I will be setting up and handling all of the camera equipment. I will also be the editor for the music video as well.

To help the band out Shane Bartrum will be helping them move and set up the band equipment, this is because for the time that we need to film we have to move and set up the music equipment and as well as film and move the equipment back all in 2 hours so we are pushed for time. So Shane will be there to help out with the moving of equipment.

Pre Production - Equipment list

The equipment I will be using is high quality and professional. I will be supplying all of my own equipment as well so there is no extra cost for this.

  • Nikon D3300
    • This Camera is a professional DSLR camera and it films in full HD (1920x1080) at 60fps, this means that i can get slow motion shots because I can slow the footage down to half before it begins to stutter.
  • 18-55mm Lens
    • This is the standard lens that comes with the camera and this will be the primary lens I will be using because 18-35mm is the sweat spot for filming with a DSLR.
  • 70-300mm telephoto Lens
    •  I will only need this lens if i am doing far away shots because of the range of focal length it gives me and the amount of zoom it gives me.
  • Rode Microphone
    • I will be using this for better audio quality when I'm using the camera in case i will have any dialogue at the beginning or end of the video.
  • Rode DeadCat
    •  I will be using this if I'm filming outside because it dramatically cuts down the wind noise that is picked up by the microphone.
  • Rode Boom pole
    • I will be using this if there is any dialogue because I can hold the microphone above the person that is talking to get loader and better quality audio.
  • Camera Stabilizer
    • I will be using this for most of the band shots and this is because I can get a smooth tracking shot without having it look like its handheld. It also means I can get close up to the band members but not have a tripod in the way.
  • Tripod
    •  I will be using a tripod because it will mean that I can get stable shots so the video looks as professional as possible.
  • Camera Dolly
    • I have a camera dolly that connects to the bottom of any tripod and this is something that I can use of a smooth floor to get very smooth tracking shots
  • Action camera
    • I also have an action camera that means that i can mount it to the drum kit or the top of a guitar and get some very close up shots in the band scene.

Pre Production - Lyric Breakdown

In the end, as we fade into the night (Whoa!)
Who will tell the story of your life?
In the end, as my soul's laid to rest
What is left of my body?
Or am I just a shell?

[D1] I have fought
And with flesh and blood, I commanded an army
Through it all
I have given my heart for a moment of glory

In the end, as you fade into the night (Whoa!)
Who will tell the story of your life? (Whoa!)
And who will remember your last goodbye?
[D2] (Whoa!)
'Cause it's the end and I'm not afraid
I'm not afraid to die

I'm not afraid!
I'm not afraid to die
!
[D3]

Born a saint
Though, with every sin I still wanna be holy
I will live, again
Who we are isn't how we live
We are more than our bodies
[D4]
If I fall, I will rise back up and relive my glory

In the end, as we fade into the night (Whoa!)
Who will tell the story of your life? (Whoa!)
And who will remember your last goodbye? (Whoa!)
'Cause it's the end and I'm not afraid
I'm not afraid to die

In the end, as you fade into the night (Whoa!)
Who will tell the story of your life? (Whoa!)
And who will remember your last goodbye? (Whoa!)
'Cause it's the end, and I'm not afraid
I'm not afraid to die

Who will remember this last goodbye? (Whoa!)
'Cause it's the end, and I'm not afraid
I'm not afraid to die

I'm not afraid!
I'm not afraid to die!
Not afraid!
I'm not afraid to die!

[D1]This part of the song is about after you die what happens to you and who will remember you.

In death there is a lot question that no has any answers for and it’s the fear of the unknown that people are scared of. This song address that but the questions that set up the rest of the song are here.
[D2]People want other people to know what you I did in life and to have people to tell your story to. They also want someone to say and remember your goodbye.
[D3]This is that most people aren’t afraid to die but what people are afraid of is when it will happen.
[D4]This line is saying that no matter what life throws at you it doesn’t define you and that you are still your own person.
