Unit 3 - Research

Research Technigues

The purpose of research is so that you know what you are spending money on will be viable and will make money back. Audience research is used so that you can know if there is the demographic out there for what you plan to make to be viable.

Quantitative Research - Quantitative Research is statistical data that can be quantified. It is numbers that can be calculated through surveys and watch data. Questionnaires are a good way of doing this because you can ask multiply choice questions and have data that you can quantify to find the most common results.

Qualitative Research - This is people’s opinions on a certain thing it is not something that can be calculated through numbers. This means that the spread of answers will be a lot wider because people have free rein to answer how they want to. This is also a good research technique because you can get more in-depth answers to the research you are conducting.

Audience Research – Audience research is research into the intended target audience of the film. This is something that is very important to making the film as it will mean that you can specifically aim the film to be for a specific audience. Audience research involves research into the social class, ethnicity, race, age, gender and sexuality of different audiences so that when you make the film you can know the demographic you are aiming it to.

Production Research – Production research will involve the research into the idea for the film and for this you will take into account the audience research you have done. It will also involve the costing research, this is something that has to be done to make sure that the film will be financially viable to make. It will involve all of the pre-production costs, Production costs and post-production costs. It will also take into account the marketing of the film, so how you will market the film to its intended audience.

Primary research – Primary research is research that you have conducted yourself. This will mean that you have gone out and done questionnaires, audience research and focus groups. Primary research gives you the control to make sure that the research you are doing is very specific to what you are researching.

Secondary research – Secondary research is research that has already been done by someone else and has been published, you can use other peoples research to help better yours. This is something that is really easy to do now that we can use the internet to find out research. Lots of people have done the research and you can use it. There has been lots research into the viability of TV shows becoming films because TV shows like the inbetweeners and shows like that have already became films so the research is there to adapt.

Data Gathering Agencies – Data gathering agencies like BARB and the numbers.com are good because they track TV viewing data and present them as graphs this is also quantitative research because it is numerical figures that can be used as part of the research, but it can be used to see if there is the market out there of the film to be made and to be successful
